A deep burgundy Banarasi Katan silk saree, the body set with thread-by-thread Kadhua butti and an anchor motif at the anchal that returns the eye to the drape. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the border is intricate and continuous, framing the cloth on every edge. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
What lifts a Banarasi like this into luxury is the discipline behind it. The Kadhua technique demands a fresh weft for every motif, the weaver building each form into the body of the cloth rather than laying it on top. The result is a drape with weight, glow, and the quiet confidence that comes from time spent at the loom.
The drape carries a second weave: Ektara. Where the Kadhua gives the piece its precision, Ektara gives it its hand — softer, flowier, with a deeper gloss and an easier hand to drape.
Styling Note
This saree drapes beautifully in the Nivi or Bengali style, the anchal falling cleanly to lead the eye. Pair with antique gold or polki jewellery — the zari work reads best against warm metal tones. A deep burgundy or antique gold raw silk blouse keeps the focus on the weave; a contrast blouse in a deeper tone of the border colour works equally well.

Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
