A Banarasi Katan silk saree in green with a maroon Kadiyal border — the contrast is woven into the body without a seam, the weft itself carrying the colour change. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari, the Kadhua butti placed across the body and gathered into a denser run at the anchal. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
Kadhua is among the most demanding Banarasi techniques — every motif is built into the weave thread by thread, never embroidered on after. Each butti carries its own weft, and the loom may take weeks to release a single drape; the slowness is the luxury, and it is what gives a Kadhua piece its unbroken, single-breath composition.
Styling Note
This saree drapes beautifully in the Nivi style, the weighted anchal falling cleanly to lead the eye. Pair with antique gold or temple jewellery — the zari work reads best against warm metal tones. A maroon or deep green raw silk blouse keeps the focus on the weave; a contrast blouse in a deeper tone of the border colour works equally well.

Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
