A handwoven Banarasi fabric thaan in purple — thread-by-thread floral motifs in dual-tone purple across the body, drawn over a smooth, weight-bearing field of katan silk. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.

Kadhua is the most disciplined of the Banarasi techniques: every butti is built into the cloth thread by thread, never embroidered on after. Each motif carries its own weft, which is why a single drape takes weeks at the loom and reads as one continuous, unbroken composition.

Styling Note

This thaan is best read as a piece of cloth in waiting — tailored as a blouse, kurta or lehenga panel. Pair the finished garment with silver or polki jewellery, and consider the matching purple yardage with magenta piping as the lining or contrast to let the weave lead.

Caring for Your Handloom

A handloom fabric is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.

After wearing, allow the fabric to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.

Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the fabric, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the fabric stay beautiful for years.
