A rose beige Banarsi silk saree worked over with a fine tonal jaal — a soft diamond lattice of gold zari that runs edge to edge, scattered through with small buti picked out in teal and deep maroon meena. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the anchal deepens into a closer, more densely worked jaal, and the narrow border carries a herringbone and scallop line that finishes against a rose selvedge. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
Meenadar work is what makes a saree like this slow. The coloured buti are not printed or added afterwards; each shade is introduced thread by thread as the weave advances, carried on its own shuttle across the width. On a ground this pale there is nowhere for an error to hide — every small teal and maroon mark has to land exactly on the lattice beneath it, and that placement discipline is what keeps a single drape on the loom for roughly twenty-five days. This is the arithmetic behind Banarsi as a luxury textile: the value sits in hours and precision, not in ornament alone.
Styling Note
Drapes cleanly in the Nivi style, where the tonal jaal reads as texture and the meena buti catch the light in small flashes. Antique-gold or polki jewellery sits well against the soft rose ground, and chand bali earrings keep the balance light. A blouse in deep maroon raw silk picks up the meena; a rose-beige tissue blouse keeps the drape entirely tonal.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
