A yellow Banarasi lehenga in pure Katan silk, drawn over with Meenadar motifs in coloured silk and zari across each panel. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — each panel carrying its placement, the border holding the hem of the lehenga in a steady worked line. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.

Meenadar — meenakari in silk — is the technique of weaving fine coloured-silk threads alongside zari to enamel motifs in jewel-like detail. On an eighteen-panel lehenga the discipline is doubled: each panel must carry its motif placement and the borders must join cleanly at every seam. That is loom hours and master craft put in service of one drape.

Styling Note

Pair with a structured zari blouse and a contrasting dupatta in ivory or red. Antique-gold, kundan or polki jewellery suits the warm yellow of the ground; a deep maroon or emerald blouse will lift the colour further.

Caring for Your Handloom

A handloom lehenga is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.

After wearing, allow the lehenga to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.

Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the lehenga, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the lehenga stay beautiful for years.
