A handwoven Banarasi pure Katan silk saree in light green, the field drawn over with thread-by-thread Kadhua butis that carry a warm yellow-gold zari across the drape. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari, the border holding the edge in steady detail and the anchal closed with an anchor motif. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
The unhurried look of a Kadhua saree comes from the loom itself — every butti is a small act of weaving, set into the cloth thread by thread. The yellow-gold zari sits cleanly against the pale green ground because nothing has been added after the weaving was done. The textile is finished when it leaves the loom.
Styling Note
Drape in a Nivi style to let the pale green run uninterrupted, or in a Bengali drape to bring the anchal forward over both shoulders. Pair with antique-gold or polki — small jhumkas with a slim choker, or a chand-bali. A tonal mint or old-gold raw-silk blouse holds the drape together.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
