A pure Katan silk Banarasi saree in a deep, regal purple, with a Shikargah hunting-scene composition drawn over the full field of the drape. Figures of birds, foliage and stylised animal forms fill the body, woven on a Tanchoi ground that holds the composition in satin clarity. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the figures are placed across the body and the edges close the scene without breaking it. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
Shikargah is among the most narrative of Banarasi compositions — an entire landscape woven into the body of the drape, figure by figure. Carrying that level of scene-work cleanly across a Tanchoi ground takes months at the loom and a weaver willing to hold the storyline straight from end to end. The piece reads less like brocade and more like a woven manuscript.
Styling Note
Drape Nivi-style with the anchal pleated over the shoulder so the figures stay visible. Pair with antique-gold or polki, and choose a blouse in deeper purple, plum or oxidised gold raw silk.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
