A deep navy Banarsi katan silk saree carrying an all-over meenakari floral jaal — full blooms in rose, magenta and marigold opening along a silver-gold zari vine that runs unbroken across the body. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari, with the flowers brought to life in coloured meena against the dark ground. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
Meenadar weaving layers coloured silk into the zari jaal as the cloth is made, so each flower carries two or three tones without a single stitch added afterward. On a navy ground that contrast glows — the slow placement of colour, bloom by bloom, is what gives a meena Banarsi its depth and its worth.
A wide floral zari border and a matching kalga pallu close the drape, and the katan silk keeps a smooth, substantial fall.
Styling Note
Drape in a Nivi to let the meena blooms carry across the pleats, with the floral border framing the fall. Pair with gold or antique-gold temple jewellery; an ivory, gold or deep-navy blouse all work cleanly against the dark ground.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
