A deep navy Banarsi silk saree with rows of paired parrots perched on a branch, woven in silver-cream zari with touches of green and turquoise meena on the wings and heads — a playful tota buti set against a dark, quiet ground.
The border is a shikargah band: deer, birds and foliage in cream zari on navy, framed by a chevron trim and a bright green selvedge. The anchal opens into a large zari field with kalga (paisley-cone) motifs.
The contrast of pale zari on midnight blue makes the figures read crisply, and the green edge gives the whole saree a lift.
Styling Note
Drape in a Nivi so the parrot rows line up down the pleats and the shikargah border frames the hem. Silver or oxidised jewellery complements the cream zari; try a bright green blouse to match the selvedge, or navy for a tonal look.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
