A deep teal Banarsi silk saree left entirely plain across the body, so the colour and the fall of the silk carry the piece on their own. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — a narrow kinari of curling leaves and small five-petal flowers in gold, ivory and red, set against a darker ground band and closed by a fine rope rib. An unornamented body is its own kind of difficulty. There is no motif to distract from a slub, a shade shift or a dropped end — the weaver holds a single, even beat over the entire length, and any inconsistency in tension shows immediately in the way light travels across the silk. That evenness is what gives this drape its liquid fall, and the woven border keeps the piece unmistakably Banarsi rather than merely plain. About 18 days on the loom, the shortest a Banarsi saree can honestly take.
Styling Note
The plain body takes a Nivi or a Bengali drape equally well; with a Bengali pleat the border reads as a continuous line across the shoulder. Gold, temple or kundan jewellery all sit cleanly against teal, and a single heavy piece carries further here than a layered set. For the blouse, an oxblood or maroon silk picks up the selvedge, while an antique-gold brocade lifts the border colours.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
