A handwoven Banarasi satin silk saree in grey, drawn over with densely packed Tanchoi motifs in resham across the body. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the satin face holds the motif rhythm cleanly from selvedge to selvedge, and the pallu carries the same composition forward. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
Tanchoi is the satin-faced Banarasi tradition where the pattern is carried entirely by warp and weft — no extra weft floats, no shortcuts at the loom. The back of a true Tanchoi reads almost as cleanly as the front, and that structural discipline is what places the weave in the higher Banarasi register. Layered with resham, the motifs sit flush with the surface but carry depth.
Styling Note
Drapes beautifully Nivi-style with the pallu pleated narrow so the satin field reads as one continuous composition. Pair with antique-gold or temple jewellery and an oxblood, deep-emerald or ivory raw-silk blouse to lift the cool grey ground.

Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
