A Banarsi silk saree in muted mauve — a dusty rose-taupe that shifts with the light — set with slender floral butas in pale gold zari across the body. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the border runs a dense flowering vine in gold from edge to edge, repeated in a deep band along the anchal, with a slim rose piping at the selvedge. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
On a muted ground the zari has to do all the talking, and that raises the stakes at the loom: each buta is inlaid by hand exactly where the graph demands, and the border's vine must run unbroken for metres without a repeat falling out of step. The result is a saree whose richness sits in the weave itself rather than in loud colour — cloth that rewards a second look.
Styling Note
A Nivi drape with a neat shoulder fall suits the quiet formality of this piece; the Gujarati drape brings the anchal band to the front if you prefer the gold forward. Rose gold and polki are natural companions to the mauve; pearls cool it down. Blouse in the same dusty rose keeps it seamless, while deep wine or antique gold adds weight.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
