A deep rust Banarsi silk saree, the ground left open and unbroken so that each flowering buti can sit on it like a small painted study — iris and leaf worked in green and marigold meena against the burnt-earth silk. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari; the border runs as a slim ivory leaf-and-vine trail set against an olive selvedge, and the anchal carries the same florals in a wider, more generous repeat. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
The kadhua technique is what makes a saree like this expensive to make and difficult to imitate. Every motif is woven as a separate, self-contained unit — the weaver stops, changes the shuttle for each colour in the flower, and builds the bloom thread by thread before moving on. With meena colouring layered into the buti, that count of shuttle changes multiplies, and roughly 36 days pass at the loom before the length is complete. Turn the saree over and there are no floats running between motifs: that clean reverse is the proof of the method.
Styling Note
The open ground suits a Nivi or Bengali drape, both of which let the spaced butis breathe rather than crowd. Antique-gold, temple work or a pair of chand balis will echo the warmth of the rust without flattening it. For the blouse, consider olive or deep moss raw silk to pick up the selvedge, or an unlined ivory to follow the border.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
