A slate-blue Banarsi silk saree veiled in a dense all-over jaal, the foliate tracery worked in pale zari so the whole ground reads as brocade shot with light. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the wide champagne-gold border is woven edge to edge in a fine diaper pattern, and the anchal closes over panels of latticework before ending in a plain teal silk fall. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
An unbroken jaal is among the most demanding grounds a loom can carry: the pattern repeats continuously, so every pick of the weft must land in register with the last or the net visibly tears out of line. There are no rests and no plain stretches to hide in — the weaver keeps that discipline running the full length of the saree, which is why cloth like this gathers weight, depth and hours in equal measure.
Styling Note
This drapes well in Nivi with the anchal left long, so the lattice panels and teal fall show in sequence. The grey-blue takes silver, polki or pearl jewellery naturally; antique gold deepens the champagne border. A teal blouse picks up the fall; champagne or grey keeps the piece tonal.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
