A handwoven Banarasi Katan silk lehenga in mustard, drawn over with meenakari motifs in coloured silk and zari setting the rhythm across each panel. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — each panel carrying its placement, a wide worked border closing the hem, and Nakshi Cutwork finishing the surface motifs by hand. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.

Cutwork is the Banarasi answer to jamdani: extra weft floats are woven in to form each motif and then trimmed by hand from the back of the cloth, leaving a sharp, clean motif on the surface. Combined with Meenadar enamelling in coloured silk, the discipline doubles — every motif must be lifted, then trimmed, then placed cleanly across all eighteen panels of the lehenga.

Styling Note

Pair with a structured zari blouse and a sheer dupatta in ivory or contrast deep red. Antique-gold, kundan or polki jewellery suit the warm mustard ground; a contrast emerald, maroon or oxblood blouse gives the piece its colour anchor.

Caring for Your Handloom

A handloom lehenga is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.

After wearing, allow the lehenga to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.

Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the lehenga, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the lehenga stay beautiful for years.
