A pure Katan silk Banarasi saree in deep bottle green, carrying Kairy paisley motifs across the body and a Kuniya corner-motif placed at the anchal. The border frames the drape with the Kairy rhythm carried through. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — including the paisley figures and the corner work at the anchal. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
What distinguishes Kadhua from simpler Banarasi techniques is that no thread is ever cut behind the motif — each butti finishes within itself. That cleanness on the reverse is the hallmark of a true Kadhua, and the reason the weaving takes weeks rather than days.
Styling Note
Drape Nivi or Bengali; the deep green pairs beautifully with antique-gold, temple or kundan jewellery. A blouse in mossy green, ivory raw silk or oxidised gold tissue keeps the focus on the Kairy work.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
