A lavender-grey Banarsi silk saree traced with diagonal garlands of flowering vine, the leafy sprays alternating between silver and pale gold zari across the softly lustrous ground. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the broad champagne border is worked in a fine herringbone-and-scroll pattern, and the anchal gathers the vines into closing bands finished with slate-blue tassels. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
A trailing vine is harder to weave than a detached buti: the garland must flow — every leaf joined to the next, every curve continuous — while still landing on the diagonal at a constant angle. The weaver alternates silver and gold wefts spray by spray, keeping both metals in register down the full six yards. It is the kind of patient, rhythmic work that gives Banarsi cloth its depth without ever raising its voice.
Styling Note
Drape in Nivi with narrow pleats to keep the garlands running unbroken; a Bengali drape softens the piece further. Pearls and silver are effortless with the lavender; polki adds a warmer sparkle. Blouse in silver-grey or the same lavender for a tonal look, or a deep aubergine to give the pale ground an anchor.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
