A length of bottle green Banarasi Katan silk in Shikargah — a narrative hunting scene built into the weave, animals and figures placed across the cloth, all woven in zari rather than printed on top. As with any true Banarasi: The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.

Tanchoi is prized for what it leaves out — there are no float threads at the back, no shortcuts at the loom. Every motif is paid for in weft passes, and the result is a smooth, lustrous textile that holds its detail across years of wear and rest. Bought by the metre, the same care and weave-time apply — the cloth comes off the loom as a length of true Banarasi, ready for a blouse, sherwani panel or panelled lehenga.

Styling Note

A length like this lends itself to tailored use — a structured blouse, a sherwani panel, or panels for a lehenga. The zari sits flush against the weave, so the cloth holds its shape under stitching and reads cleanly across joins. Pair finished garments with antique gold or temple jewellery to let the weave carry the eye.

Caring for Your Handloom

A handloom fabric is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.

After wearing, allow the fabric to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.

Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the fabric, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the fabric stay beautiful for years.
