A soft dusty-rose Banarsi silk saree scattered with large flowering blooms, each blossom worked as a separate kadhua motif and lifted with small touches of meena colour at its heart — quiet blues, greens and warm reds set into the gold. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the wide border runs deep gold with a repeating chevron and floral band, and the anchal carries the same blooms at fuller scale above a rose-and-gold fringe. Kadhua means the motif is cut and woven in on its own, with no float carried behind the cloth — the weaver stops, builds the flower, and begins again, which is why the reverse of a kadhua drape stays nearly as clean as its face. Adding meena colour multiplies that patience, because every shade inside a single blossom is a separate pass at the loom. A piece like this takes a little over a month to come off the frame, and that unhurried arithmetic is the whole reason Banarsi silk is counted as a luxury textile rather than a decorated one.
Styling Note
A fluid Katan that takes a Nivi drape beautifully, with the pallu left long so the larger blooms read in full. Rose gold, uncut polki or fine kundan flatters the dusty tone, and chand bali earrings echo the roundness of the flowers. A deep rose or antique-gold silk blouse keeps the palette tonal, while an ivory raw-silk blouse lifts it.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
