A dove-grey Banarsi silk saree crossed with diagonal vine stripes that alternate between gold and silver zari, the lustrous grey ground holding both tones in quiet balance. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the border runs a full floral meander in gold between serrated edgings, and the anchal closes with deep zari bands and a row of hand-knotted grey tassels. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
Alternating two metals along a diagonal is exacting work: the gold and silver wefts must trade places at a fixed rhythm, and the angle has to hold true from selvedge to selvedge across the entire length. On a plain-coloured ground every drift would show. The evenness of these lines is the weaver's signature — measured not in ornament but in control.
Styling Note
The diagonals sit best in a Nivi drape with slim, even pleats; the piece also takes a Gujarati drape well, letting the tasselled anchal fan across the front. Silver or oxidised jewellery keeps it cool and modern; gold warms it. A charcoal or silver-grey blouse stays tonal, while a deep plum blouse gives the grey some colour to lean on.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
