A deeply ornamented Banarasi pure silk saree in maroon, with a Shikargah composition of scrolling vines, florals and forest motifs drawn over the body in a continuous Jangla layout. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the Banarasi border runs steady along both selvedges and the anchal carries an anchor motif in keeping with the field. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
A Shikargah composition asks the loom to behave like a painter's hand — every leaf, vine and figure placed exactly, with no embroidery to correct it afterward. Hours stack into days at the loom, and the discipline of placement is what keeps the piece reading as a single, unbroken field of zari.
Styling Note
Drape it in the classic Nivi style to let the Shikargah field unfold along the body, with the anchal pleated to fall open over the shoulder. Pair with kundan or polki — antique-gold tones sit closer to the maroon ground than yellow gold. A tonal maroon silk blouse, or an ivory raw-silk blouse for contrast, keeps the focus on the weave.

Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
