A handwoven Banarasi fabric thaan in deep purple, woven in Pure Katan Silk and carrying thread-by-thread butti motifs scattered across the field — Banarasi by the metre, sold for tailors, ateliers and home commissions. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the field carries the same loom discipline whether the cloth becomes a saree, a lehenga, or a kurta. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.

A Kadhua thaan carries the same discipline as a finished saree — every butti is woven thread by thread into the cloth rather than embroidered after. For a tailor, this means the design will not lift, fade or fray with stitching; for the wearer, it means the textile reads as a whole rather than as decoration applied to silk. The patience the loom asks of the weaver is the same, whether the cloth becomes a saree, a lehenga or a kurta.

Styling Note

This thaan stitches beautifully into a saree, lehenga or long kurta. Pair the finished piece with antique gold or kundan jewellery to echo the zari, and consider a raw silk blouse in deep aubergine or antique gold so the weave stays the centre of the look.

Caring for Your Handloom

A handloom textile is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.

After wearing, allow the textile to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.

Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the textile, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the textile stay beautiful for years.
