A handwoven Banarasi silk belt in deep red, paced on the same Varanasi looms as the larger drapes. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the red ground holds gold work with weight, catching the light along the waist. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.

Red is among the most demanding grounds for zari — the colour needs precise placement for the gold to read cleanly. A Banarasi belt carries the same hand discipline as a saree, and that placement work is what keeps the textile a luxury across every scale of object it leaves the loom in.

Styling Note

Cinches beautifully over a saree, lehenga or contrast kurta to define the waist. Pair with gold or kundan jewellery; the red sits powerfully alongside ivory, gold or black ensembles.

Caring for Your Handloom

A handloom belt is not just carried — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.

After wearing, allow the belt to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.

Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the belt, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the belt stay beautiful for years.

Before you decide

Three things we would tell you across the table.

१

Woven once, never repeated

Every saree here is a single piece off a handloom in Banaras. Small irregularities in the weave are the weaver’s hand, not a flaw — and the reason no two are the same.
