A Banarsi suit set in soft sage green: the kurta length carries a woven neckline yoke in gold zari — a scalloped, lace-like collar built directly into the cloth — while the accompanying lengths are scattered with small zari butis and finished with a deep woven border in pale gold diaper work. The yoke, butis and borders are all woven in zari, not printed or embroidered after. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
A woven neckline is a quiet feat of planning: the yoke is mapped on the loom before the first pick, so the motif arrives exactly where the collar will fall when the garment is cut. There is no correcting it afterwards — the weaver commits to the placement from the start, which is what separates a woven suit length from yardage with a motif stamped on.
Styling Note
The sage ground keeps jewellery flexible — light gold, pearl or kundan studs all sit well against it. Tailor the kurta so the woven yoke sits clean at the collarbone, and let the bordered length fall as the dupatta drape. Ivory or gold accents keep the set tonal; a deeper leaf-green lifts the contrast.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom suit set is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the suit set to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the suit set, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the suit set stay beautiful for years.
