A marigold-yellow Banarsi silk saree, its body set with a staggered field of small meenakari butis — each a slim floral spray outlined in zari and filled with rose-pink, coral and soft green meena. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari; the border runs narrow and disciplined, a chevron band edged with fine dotted lines that closes the drape cleanly on every side. Meenadar work is the reason this piece reads as luxury. Colour in a Banarsi weave is not printed or embroidered on — every meena tint inside a buti is a separate thread the weaver must introduce, hold and cut by hand before moving to the next. On a field this open, the discipline is in the spacing: each buti has to land exactly where the last one predicted, over metres of silk, with nothing to hide an error. About 25 days on the loom, and the count of colours in the buti is what sets that number.
Styling Note
The open field and narrow border suit a clean Nivi drape, where the buti spacing stays legible across the pleats. Antique-gold or temple jewellery sits well against the marigold; chand balis pick up the meena colours without competing with them. For the blouse, a deep green or oxblood silk sharpens the yellow, while a tonal gold raw silk keeps the whole drape in one register.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
