A rani pink Banarsi silk saree carrying a diamond-set buti in gold zari — a four-petal rosette held inside a lozenge frame, repeated in even diagonal rows across the body. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari; the border runs as a series of stacked zari bands, edged above with a fine temple-triangle rib and below with a row of dotted zari, while the pink deepens toward coral at the very edge. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.
Restraint of this kind is harder to weave than it looks. A geometric buti has no organic line to absorb a small error — the lozenge must sit square, the four petals must balance, and the diagonal repeat has to hold true across the entire width and length of the drape, or the eye reads the drift immediately. The border's stacked bands demand the same steadiness, each rib laid at an unvarying pitch. About 30 days on the loom for a butidar worked to this discipline.
Styling Note
A Nivi drape keeps the diagonal repeat legible; a Gujarati drape turns the anchal outward and brings the banded border across the front. Kundan and polki both hold their own against rani pink, and plain gold reads cleanly if the jewellery is kept minimal. For the blouse, a gold tissue or antique-gold brocade picks up the zari, while a deep bottle green makes the pink read stronger.
Caring for Your Handloom
A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.
After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.
Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
