Multicolor Banarasi Rangkaat Pure Silk Handloom Saree

A multicolour Rangkaat Banarsi saree drawn over in diagonal bands of magenta, purple, orange, marigold and blush, each band edged with a fine run of zari buti that travels the length of the drape. The motifs, anchal and border are all woven in zari — the deep red border carries a dense brocade of small repeating blossoms, closed with a striped selvedge. Handwoven in Varanasi on a traditional pit loom.

Colour play of this kind is the hardest thing to ask of a loom. Every change of shade is a change of weft, set by hand so the diagonals stay true across the full width of the saree; a single band out of step shows immediately. That discipline is what separates a woven stripe from a printed one, and it is the reason a piece like this cannot be hurried off the loom.

Styling Note

The diagonal fall reads best in a classic Nivi drape, with the pleats set narrow so the bands stay unbroken. Gold or antique-gold jewellery sits comfortably against the warm spectrum here — chand balis or a simple temple chain rather than anything stone-heavy. A plain red or deep magenta silk blouse pulls the border forward; a blush blouse softens the whole drape.

Caring for Your Handloom

A handloom saree is not just worn — it is preserved, rested, and cared for over time.

After wearing, allow the saree to settle gently. Dry clean only, so the weave, colour, and zari remain protected. When storing, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and keep it in a dry place. Zari is delicate and responds to changes in weather; the muslin helps the textile breathe while keeping the weave stable.

Avoid spraying perfume directly onto the saree, as fragrance and alcohol can affect the fabric and zari. Every few months, open it out and let it air naturally for a while — a small ritual that allows the weave to breathe and helps the saree stay beautiful for years.
